This is a critisim of the travel industry, but it's more of an outlet for Chuck Thompson to tell about the adventures the travel magazines wouldn't pay for. He admitted it in the introduction: "The most memorable experiences --getting laid, sick, lost, home--always seem 'too negative,' 'too graphic,' of 'too over heads of our readers' to find their ways into print." Fortunately, his misadventures were pretty funny and smart and the travel facts didn't really bother me.

I've only read about 25 pages, so I don't have much to say about the book itself. But, I have a soft-spot for Julia Glass's first novel, Three Junes, and I went to a reading of this book at the Newburyport Literary Festival in April. The reading was also a tasting; the chef at this local restaurant baked desserts based on some that Greenie, the main character, baked in her shop. One of them, the coconut cake with Meyer Lemon and a brown sugar glaze, was one of the most memorable desserts in my dessert-eating history. And apparently, said cake was an impetus for some of the action of the book.
