Maybe it is a cultural bias (and 100% my fault) but I had a TERRIBLE time keeping all the characters straight. Especially since I am not familiar with all the Japanese honorifics. In some of the most troubling spots, the author added a comment about it - for example, it is considered an honor if someone uses part of their own name or nickname when they give you a name. But because the characters are renamed several times, I kept having to go back an re-read. (each stage of your life, someone gives you a new name. And many of them stick for years, like nicknames, so depending on who was talking and how long they'd known the person, they might use one of 5 or 6 different names)
This book is written for teens, and their intellect is stronger than mine, so maybe it's not difficult for everyone else.
The story was ok. It ends kind of... well, it just ends. It was interesting and sad and well written (easily accessible language) and, of course, it was full of parables to Your Own Life and how to be a better person -- even when samurais kill your parents. Like I said, maybe it's a cultural incompatibility, but it just felt like the character should have felt something more and it's frustrating for some one (like me) to read a story where "I'm ok with being a slave, because the samurais killed my parents, but hey! That's how it goes."...less

Ryan got a copy of this book from work and read almost the entire thing in one sitting and recommended it to me. I, in turn, read it almost in one sitting. It's a sweet love story that is well balanced with the "dude perspective." It's a wonderful tale of meeting your soul mate, but with plenty of F bombs and beer drinking. A very good balance.
This is right up there with "Blankets" as a great example of what can be done with the comic medium....less
