It's fun being immersed in the Victorian/Edwardian ages but yowza lots of characters to keep track of and too much historical lecturing. But still, I liked it.

Jane Austen
“Vanity working on a weak head produces every sort of mischief.”
Jane Austen, Emma

George Eliot
“That element of tragedy which lies in the very fact of frequency, has not yet wrought itself into the coarse emotion of mankind; and perhaps our frames could hardly bear much of it. If we had a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, it would be like hearing the grass grow and the squirrel’s heart beat, and we should die of that roar which lies on the other side of silence. As it is, the quickest of us walk about well wadded with stupidity.”
George Eliot, Middlemarch

Jane Austen
“It is very often nothing but our own vanity that deceives us.”
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen
“Nobody, who has not been in the interior of a family, can say what the difficulties of any individual of that family may be.”
Jane Austen, Emma

Jane Austen
“but a sanguine temper, though for ever expecting more good than occurs, does not always pay for its hopes by any proportionate depression. it soon flies over the present failure, and begins to hope again.”
Jane Austen, Emma
