"I danced around this book when it first came out, and even more so during that fateful time of graduation last year, when many other parents made the oh so typical plans of college and life beyond. I'm going to try diving in now, wish me luck." Jun 04, 2014 04:13AM

3.5 round up to 4 stars. A vivid picture of lives scarred, but ultimately not destroyed by mental illness. At times I felt the author would get lost in long tangents, to the point where I would even forgot how we ended up some where. Likely a functio...more

I think we both tried. I just could not get into this story. Took me almost 4x longer than a similar read because I was forcing myself to finish it.

Fascinating story of a young man who flees Vietnam with his family at young age. His life is a series of mostly tragic occurrences and through perseverance and luck, he makes it through. It makes for a great read, however the story runs out of steam...more

Overly dramatic, but I ate it up. The waterworks came, but that may be due to life stressors and lack of sleep more than anything else.

Has something to do with the show Californication, not sure what, as I have never seen the show. As a stand alone read, it's funny, light, and entertaining.

I am frequently asked if I have visited Israel, whereas yet, it is simply assumed that I have. Well, I don’t travel. I really don’t, and if I did, I probably wouldn’t visit Israel. I remember how it was in 1948 when Israel was being established and all my Jewish friends were ecstatic, I was not. I said: what are we doing? We are establishing ourselves in a ghetto, in a small corner of a vast Muslim sea. The Muslims will never forget nor forgive, and Israel, as long as it exists, will be embattled. I was laughed at, but I was right. I can’t help but feel that the Jews didn’t really have the right to appropriate a territory only because 2000 years ago, people they consider their ancestors, were living there. History moves on and you can’t really turn it back. (#92 ff.) Isaac Asimov

“One such question revolved around the informal institution of black kids eating together in the cafeteria. I’m going to let you in on a secret: growing black children like to eat. In a majority-white school, they are often friends with other black people. This has been known to result in black kids eating together at the same table. While this terrorist cell–like activity is a perceived clear and present danger to some in the non-black community, the agenda at most of these nefarious, exclusive gatherings consisted of talking about classes, flirting, making fun of each other, and, oh, plotting the downfall of White America—but only on every third Tuesday.”

“I advise you to be suspicious of any black American whose family does not claim a blood connection to Native Americans. That’s a clear sign of a racial infiltrator who has not done enough research.”
