Loved it!! This book was about something I think about all the time - how decisions in your early adulthood can shape the rest of your life. This book starts out with a brief glimpse into Jesse's life as an 18 year old who has just won an Olympic medal for swimming. The rest of the book is divided into thirds. Each one is a snapshot of Jesse's life as a 39 year old and each is an equally feasible, completely different way her life could have turned out (lesbian living in New York, adulterous mother to be in the same small town she grew up in, single mom with two grown up kids living in Florida). The book is tied together by the core people in Jesse's life, who make appearances in each of the three versions of her life. Very thought provoking and excellently written!...less

This book was pretty good (though not, in my opinion, worthy of the Pulitzer it won)... A father and his son make his way along a road headed toward the coast. They struggle through a post-apocalyptic world in which they must scrounge for food and ward off attacks from other survivors who would like to use them for protein.
Don't read this book if you don't think you can deal with some pretty graphic images of cannibalism. ...less

One of my top 5 all time favorites. This book deals with racial issues in America better than any book I've ever read.
The story follows the lives of two rival families in a fictional Ivy League college town outside Boston. The fathers of both families teach at the college. As the book progresses, you follow the story of each member of the Belsey family's life. You can't help but just fall in love with each character, and flawed as they almost all are, you can totally see things from their perspective. Howard is the (white) patriarch, and has good intentions but is tragically flawed. Kiki is the matriarch and powerhouse of the family. Jerome is the eldest son, and despite always having been 'the good son' frustrates his atheist family when he becomes a born-again Christian. Zora is the take-on-the-world college aged daughter. Levi is the youngest (and in my opinion the most loveable!), and seems to struggle the most with his mixed-race identity and desperately wants to relate to 'real' african americans (as opposed to the upper class intellectual kind).
You've got to read this book. Then go read White Teeth too.
The good news is that Zadie Smith is only 33 and is bound to come out with lots more books!!...less
