I love the Beka Cooper series because it gives us a completely different view of the Tortall world. Until now, we've dealt with nobles or people very involved with nobles. With Beka, we see the poor side of Corus, but not in a disheartening way. Tammy gets us to think about the power balance between the have's and the have-not's, those who want more and those who just want *something*.

I'm rereading this book. Again. I read this book at least once a year, usually more. Tamora Pierce was hugely influential in my growing up. With this book, she taught me that girls can do anything boys can do (which is one of my cheers for radical cheerleading, by the way!), and we shouldn't be ashamed of who we are. And so many other things. I got my start in feminism thanks to her. I am who I am thanks to her. Love, Stargirl is very different from the first book. Written in Stargirl's POV, she spends a lot of time moping after her previous boyfriend Leo... until she finds a new boy. She still does awesome Stargirl-ish things (once she stops being depressed), but it's definitely less awesome than the original Stargirl. ]]>
