I reread this book a week or so ago and remembered why it is so fantastic. Freire's insights are spot on, profoundly considered, and as sincere as anything I've ever read. It's a complicated and nuanced study of how we relate to one another and how those authoritarian or patronizing relationships often contribute to the dehumanization of oppressed peoples. Freire calls for a constant struggle and moving forward in praxis, together (the oppressed and their true collaborators), in attempt to become fully human.
When we hear about Freire we usually are given a snippet of his criticism of "banking" methods of education, and while that aspect of his work is extremely important it is a gross over-simplification and extremely watered-down version of Freire's political and humanist agency and relevance....less
