What a great novel. I haven't read fiction in so long, so my opinion on this one might be a little skewed, but I so enjoyed this one that I would definitely recommend it. There's something about fiction set during the Great Depression that is really compelling to me right now. And the book is full of the unexpected, pulling back and forth between the perspective of a very old man reflecting on this life, and that of a young circus newbie trying to survive the harsh realities he's stumbled upon. I learned a lot about this slice of Americana that I had no idea about. And Gruen's writing is unexpectedly entertaining, I especially appreciate how she picks up the pace towards the climax.
