I’d read a few good reviews for “Here If You Need Me,” by Kate Braestrup, but was a little put-off by the “quasi-religious” theme. Very quasi, as it turns out. She’s a Chaplain for the Maine Warden Service (the Maine equivalent of a cross between a Parks Ranger and a Game Warden). She’s married and has six kids and has a very funny attitude about religion, what she describes as “the God thing.”

Anyway, finally broke down and bought it late yesterday afternoon and within the first two chapters (it’s a very short book), had cried three times and laughed out loud about eleven times. When she first got her uniform, her best friend told her she looked like a cross between an effeminate priest and a gas station attendant.

Anyway – check it out.

I just finished Daughters of Juarez, by Teresa Rodriguez, which I didn’t want to read and didn’t want to like. I can’t really say I liked it, and it isn’t particularly well-written or easy to read, but it is an eye-opener about something that we, educated individuals with resources, take for granted, human rights, and which is almost nonexistent for the poor, disenfranchised individuals in any country, but particularly in countries where poverty is pervasive. I finished it feeling like an Ostrich that just pulled her head out of the sand, and a little scared, not scared of being raped and killed in Mexico, but rather of a civilization that allows human rights abuses to run rampant.

I simply can’t put down The Nine by Jeffrey Toobin. As you probably know, it is all about the Supreme Court, and it is sooooo well written, and absolutely fascinating. Just to give you a nibble, first sentence, Chapter 3, “There were two kinds of cases before the Supreme Court. There were abortion cases – and there were all the others.”

This book reminded me of our global commonalities, and in a world where there is so much emphasis on our differences, I found this story based in a place that is deeper and truer than any religion, culture or government – humanity.

I'm no expert on foreign policy, in fact I tend to avoid the whole issue just because I'm so tired of the same old fighting over religion thing, but this book renewed my faith in human-kind - and in particular the power of simple caring.
