Cool graphic novel about Ariel's 9th and 10th grade years. Fun and quick to read. Her depictions of early experimentation with sexuality and substances were spot on, and she was a cool kid. Loved her obsessions with L7 and Juliette Lewis.

I actually really loved reading this, even though while I was reading this I recognized that it was cheesy and fluffy and a bit self-absorbed (by the author, not by the cat). But I love cats and libraries and the small moments about Dewey making a difference (such as jumping on the lap of a severely disabled girl and having her smile or look up for the first time) was freakin' precious.

At first I really liked it. He's very blunt about his depression and especially his conflict with manly expectations to repress feelings while being depressed. He also manages to be funny about it. But the 2nd half dragged and got off on random topics. His description of bringing his seman sample into the doctors post-vasectomy was fantastic though.

I thought I might learn some interesting facts or insights into the goth subculture. Turns out, I already seem to know everything about it. This book is too long. The author makes the same 4 points over and over, even repeating the same sentences throughout the book, making it read oddly like deja vu.
1. If you aren't goth, don't be an asshole to those who are.
2. If you are goth, be polite to those who aren't.
3. Goth is about literature, music, and most importantly, fashion.
4. Goth is "not just a phase" - grown-ups can be goth too.

Nevertheless, this book is really written for teens.
(It also has some really distracting editing/grammatical errors. And the author has an annoying way of writing about herself in 3rd person.) I wish this had been better.

I've never read anything by Tom Robbins, even though 2 of my besties are big fans of his. But I randomly saw this in the library. An adult's children's book about beer. It's pretty random with some great lines and puns, "Sadder Bud-weiser" ha. Very factual about the beer making process. Overall pretty weird, but a fast and entertaining enough read.

Has the potential to be really interesting - an insider look at the coffee shop culture of the pacific northwest. reads more like advertising for various coffee shops with not much "insider" info besides a strong dislike for starbucks language. some amusing stories and terminology, like "Why Bother" - a no-fat, no-caffiene, no-flavor cappuccino.
