This book was delightful. A quick and amusing visit to Carriger's whimsical Victorian, urban-fantasy, steampunk world.

Too much work, not enough pay off. This series is properly innovative and different, but it also fails to be relatable and the big ideas and thoughts are difficult to get at in a convoluted and heavily obscured story. I might read another book in the ...more

I liked it, but it's not a complete book, it's all build-up and no resolution, and I don't care enough about the character and the world to continue the, by all signs exciting and action packed series. Yes, I wrote "character" singular. Apart from he ...more

This one didn't piss me off quite as much as the first one. For one thing it actually has more of a story right from the start and reading the flashback story for Julia kept me interested when the action in Fillory was more meh. I still don't care ab ...more

Terry Pratchett
“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"

MY POINT EXACTLY.”
Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

Helene Uri
“Men det var verre på Institutt for kommunikasjon, for der snakker ingen av de ansatte med hverandre lenger. Det er like sant, og like paradoksalt morsomt, som at de ansatte på Praktisk-pedagogisk utdanning ved Det utdanningsvitenskapelige fakultet utvilsomt er Blinderns dårligste forelesere.”
Helene Uri, De beste blant oss

“That's why it's always worth having a few philosophers around the place. One minute it's all is truth beauty and is beauty truth, and does a falling tree in the forest make a sound if there's no one there to hear it, and then just when you think they're going to start dribbling one of 'em says, incidentally, putting a thirty-foot parabolic reflector on a high place to shoot the rays of the sun at an enemy's ships would be a very interesting demonstration of optical principles.”
Terry Pratchett, Small Gods

Felicia Day
“An uncredited study she read once said, quote, “Girls become really stupid in science after they get their period, so you’d better learn as much as possible before that happens.” I had such anxiety about this “clearly proven” biological fact that I was studying calculus by the age of twelve. When I finally got my period, I cried, not because I was growing up, but because I had just learned derivatives and really enjoyed doing them. I was scared that estrogen would wipe the ability to do them from my brain.”
Felicia Day, You're Never Weird on the Internet

Terry Pratchett
“The three rules of the Librarians of Time and Space are: 1) Silence; 2) Books must be returned no later than the last date shown; and 3) Do not interfere with the nature of causality.”
Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!
