Great even if you've seen the movie and basically know what's going to happen. Some great lines, such as, "don't you dare call me girl, she told him furiously - but not aloud." I love that line.

There are some excellent shorts in this collection, and some ok, bizarre and random ones. If you're a fan of Gaiman it's well worth a read and it's a fun and quick diversion for anyone who enjoys short fiction.

An incredibly interesting insight in to the psychological ordeals a futureless world might encounter. Different and intensely more philosophical then the movie ever manages to be. PD James knows how to construct a profound piece of fiction. I'm eager ...more

I'm torn. I liked it quite a bit, except for Proteus who is more capricious in his affection than Claudio (which is saying something) and more despicable (again saying something) considering the treatment of his friends and supposed love(s). What mak ...more

“Give me honorable enemies rather than ambitious ones, and I'll sleep more easily by night.”
George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

Kurt Vonnegut
“I saw a huge steam roller,
It blotted out the sun.
The people all lay down, lay down;
They did not try to run.
My love and I, we looked amazed
Upon the gory mystery.
"Lie down, lie down!" the people cried.
"The great machine is history!"
My love and I, we ran away,
The engine did not find us.
We ran up to a mountain top,
Left history far behind us.
Perhaps we should have stayed and died,
But somehow we don't think so.
We went to see where history'd been,
And my, the dead did stink so. ”
Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night

“The hare of history once more overtakes the tortoise of art.”
Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night

Guy Gavriel Kay
“We must be what we are, or we become our enemies. ”
Guy Gavriel Kay, A Song for Arbonne

Kurt Vonnegut
“There are plenty of good reason for fighting," I said, "but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too. Where's evil? It's that large part of every man that wants to hate without limit, that wants to hate with God on its side. It's that part of every man that finds all kinds of ugliness so attractive. "It's that part of an imbecile," I said, "that punishes and vilifies and makes war.”
Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night
