What begins and sometimes returns to is an account of ther writer's beginnings in the restaurant business. It focuses primarily on her securing a job at Thomas Keller's Per Se, and her education in food, but then loses itself in boyfriends and veers steadily off course. A quick read, but a disorganized one. I am not sure of the point the author was trying to make, and if there was no desire to make a point, hoping that it was more satisfying/filling/substantial. ...less

I went, for a time, to university in Georgia. I was the ONLY one in any of my lit classes that was from the North. I was singled out, and also, the point was made of a 'didactic tag' in my direction. I don't harbor any resentment towards this; I do, however, warn against any non-didactic tag reading of any literature hailing from anything other than the southern states preceeding the period of 1990. Yes. Hawthorne could be heavy-handed. Yes, Hawhtorne could be over the top. I could name several Southern writers guilty of this writing crime, but I cannot name as many guilty of this fine crime of writing. Sorry. Hope, yellow ribbon, et al and I still think the stories are classic, enduring, thoughtful, resonant, etc. I love Faulkner for being Faulkner. Learn where you can, y'all......less
