The writing was good: fisted and blunt, lovely local vernacular, overarchingly masculine--as you might expect from a story about a warrior dog getting in touch with his primitive wild side in the Alaskan badlands.

But it's still a story about a dog told in third person mostly limited, mostly from Buck's perspective. And Buck is cool and all, but I didn't walk away from the book having gained anything like insight.

But then again this isn't my kind of book, in the same way I can't get into fighting gnomes and elves. So why did I bother reading it?
