I liked it a little better than you did, but I thought it went on for way too long after the mystery was solved.

It combines two stories, one of which is a very engaging investigation of a decades-old unsolved crime (in fact, it's not even clear that there was a crime). But that story ends early and the book goes on for another hundred pages of a side story that I didn't find at all engaging. And it seems really odd to me that the book would not end with the logical climax. Well, Dostoevsky did get off to a good start with the murder. But give Tolstoy a chance. I want to reread War and Peace because I imagine the translation is great, and it's been 15 years or so. ]]>
