I didn't "learn" anything from this book (except maybe how not to troll for victims of my or my master's vampiric lusts?), and other reviewers here (and elsewhere) have adequately summarized the story for the interested. But in light of the flood of vampire-themed schlock we've been enduring the last few years...

For those who care - Read this novel. It's very good. It's an example of what a vampire novel can and should be. Lindqvist doesn't shy away from the essentially murderous nature of the vampire and yet creates a tragic and sympathetic character in Eli, and makes her developing relationship with Oskar highly believable (cf., with Bella and Edward). And speaking of Oskar, I liked his more nuanced character than the one depicted in the movie - he's not quite the angelic, put upon "dork." Eli, for example, first meets him as he's fantasizing about murdering his oppressors.

Which is not to say the movie isn't pretty good in it's own right.(less)

This was less of a pleasure and more of an exercise. I appreciate the craft of what Farmer was attempting to do here, and the larger context that the Wold Newton framework offers fans of alt-history. The writing is good, but my lack of knowledge in the source books left me at a slight disadvantage here, and may have affected my enjoyment of the book.

Within the first 50 lines, I realized that I was reading John Fucking Constantine (circa Delano) and various bits of Warren Ellis' writing. Having finished the book, I still find this to be the case. Stark is a 'hard man' who's spent 11 years in Hell after being sent their by his 'friends'. Recently escaped, he's now back for revenge.

He's mean, mostly amoral, anti-establishment and tougher then you or I.

The book moves ahead with brisk pace and is a fun ride. I never really felt that Stark was in any danger, and I never really understood why he earned the name 'Sandman Slim'. The denouement and potential setup for the future was a bit of a letdown for me, but YMMV. I would have enjoyed this more when I was 19 and listening to Sisters of Mercy and the like.

This wasn't an easy read; the story revolves around a war photographer who retreats in solitude to paint a mural of war for no one to see; only to be interrupted by a stranger. The stranger was photographed by him during the Balkan war, and as a result, suffered greatly. The book is a dialog between them on the nature of that strange relationship, and the manner in which it might be resolved. Counterpoint to this dialog is the Painter's recollection of his relationship with a woman who he loved, and who

The book is short, but packs a punch.

On a personal note, being born in Zagreb and having had a step-brother stuck in Sarajevo during the siege, I found the story particularly powerful.
