I adore Donna Tartt.

I read this book while driving across the country (although not, as would have been appropriate, through the deep south).

I was having a conversation about this book with a friend who's a pretty innovative horror writer the other day. He was wondering how much of the kind of resonances of this book he was missing because he had never been a precocious little girl. He may have a point. Harriet totally swept me off my feet, but that may have been because I recognized young me in her. The obsessive reading, the belief that you're more adult than adults, the inflated sense that your own moral compass is more correct than those of anyone around you...all of it was very familiar.

And it feels nice to have that represented.

There are a lot of snakes in this book. My friend Michelle, with whom I was traveling, was privy to many squeals and declarations of grossness. It took me a long time to decide to read this book. It hits many of my interests - autism, the representation of trauma, novels that incorporate photographs (especially photographs of recognizable/iconic events), but I was pretty resistant to reading it, I think out of some kind of loyalty to W. G. Sebald.

Well, Foer is no Sebald. Nonetheless, this book totally charmed me.
