Myy opinion of the book goes back and forth. Some of what I've read has been really helpful at changing the way I look at things (for the better) like living in the present moment; other things I shake my head at and strongly disagree with. Some things I read and said "I can't believe he's saying this" like his claim that talking about the past is really only detrimental to our immediate happiness. Overall his book is way over-simplified and over-generalized. He makes a few good points but overall I felt like I was reading in circles: the book is short but if all his simple, unhelpful redundancies about how happiness is our natural state could be reduced even more, the book would be more like 50 pages....less

Pretty interesting. A faster read than I thought. I had expected it to discuss more principles of everyday economic reasoning instead of focus on "case studies", but Levitt warns us of this from the beginning. And I guess the fact that it's case studies is what makes it so readable. I think my favorite one was about the bagel man... oh and also the discussion of the Chicago Public School System and examining the cause of the black-white gap in education. On that note I also liked how Levitt chooses topics that are relevant in society today. It helps the reader feel like they might be able to make that transition to asker-of-economic-questions in the world around them....less

Easy and quick read, has got some really good advice at how to treat money and how to look at money. Some of it seems almost over-simplified, though. But I'd rather have that than a long, complicated book on personal finance and investment that I can't understand or finish. Learning short, concise principles is good because it can be applied to a wide array of situations. ...less

"I got about halfway through this book and lost the copy somehow. It came highly recommended but I had a hard time reading consistently; maybe I didn't get far enough to the climax to see why it's so great.

Loved it! I was amazed at Gilbert's sharing of intimate personal spiritual experiences. She was very sincere and very down-to-earth! And hilarious! I laughed nonstop through Italy. India was funny too, but with more poignant insights. Sometimes I felt such comfort to hear her articulate the very same feelings I had had on a subject. Other things I politely disagreed with, but admired her ability to put them into a book where thousands would read them. However, I felt that Indonesia was a bit disjointed: less focused and directed than the other portions of the book. I felt like I was wandering around in a tropical land (like her), with less self-discovery and more "hanging in limbo". She brought it together in the end, but it seemed less well thought-out. Also, it bugged me when she would make a side-comment and apologize beforehand at anyone she might offend. Hey Gilbert! It's your personal opinion! It's okay if someone is offended by it! But apart from all this, I thought it was definetly a worthwhile book, well-written and full of valuable, accurate insight on the mysteries of the human's soul and search for happiness....less

I was insipired to read this book from the movie that came out last year. I liked the movie (though it had flaws) and I found that it was based off a Swedish play, which was based off this original story by Swedish author Mats Wahl. After reading this, I can see lots of unsound additions to the movie to adapt it to American audiences. However, the book isn't much better. Interesting, but not stellar. No happy ending here: this is definetly not an "American" story (and that's okay)....less

Finished this book in 3 days (600 pages). I liked how Stephenie Meyer really spent more space developing her characters in this book. Edward matured a lot. (Almost too fast, though). Upon discussion with my friends, I found more depth... Yes, Meyers uses classic, age-old themes in her books, and weaves a love triangle between Bella, Jacob and Edward. But in the end it's not wrapped up in a nice little package. She has to cut out the part of her heart that loves Jacob and deal with that pain. We get what we want in the end, but we're left with conflict as well. It's realistic. However, I was frustrated with how long it took everyone to realize that Victoria was behind the whole thing. It was really obvious from the beginning: from the second book even. And some of the descriptions were flat (like the dance party) and some of the writing felt rushed. Despite any flaws with the story, the characters became real to me! When I finished it was painful to shut the book, to put it back on the shelf and go back to my real life. I want to escape and live in Forks with the Cullens and all my new friends in these dear crafted pieces of entertainment. Stephenie Meyer may not be the perfect author, but her writing certainly drew me in. ...less

"Finished it in 3 days (560 pages). Absolutely loved it, like the first. It got quite sad after the first chapter, heartbreaking throughout the middle, but you get what you want in the end and it leaves jumping for joy!
