I'm not a fan of McCarthy for the most part, I have a degree in English Lit, with a focus on American writers, and so I read my fair share. Most of my issue with McCarthy is a style thing, so it is not fair to shun all his stories on the basis that I find his works difficult to read because he refuses to use quotation marks to indicate who is speaking.

But wow, this book broke my brain a little bit. I literally read it from cover to cover without putting it down: I ate dinner reading it, I took it to the bathroom while I brushed my teeth, I couldn't go anywhere until I was finished... It was terrifying and suspenseful and sad and loving and awful. Since reading it, I haven't been able to read "normal" fiction about people's boring lives, I had to switch to a hard sci-fi bent so that I could try to keep up the fiction-as-imaginary-world facade.

This was a much slower read than Perdido Street Station, and although I really liked the Uther Doul character, he wasn't explored enough. The book didn't get going until close to the end, and it had the same rushed wrap-it-up feeling that PSS gave me. I was really unsatisfied with the ending to this story, which is what prompted the 3 stars, and the main character wasn't nearly as interesting as Uther Doul----He should've been the main character. Took a little bit to get into, and then once it started, a fun romp... The end felt a little rushed, like he knew how to end it but only had 50 pages to wrap it all up... Adrian Mole's all growed up, but he's still a goofy little twerp. I'm only 10 pages into this at time of writing, and I haven't kept up with all the books in-between (since the first one, there are a half dozen I missed), so I'm a little behind. ]]>
