William Wharton brings the reader into the trenches with a small group of teenage and twenty year old soldiers in world war II at Christmas time. They run into a small group of German soldiers who want to communicate and ultimately want to surrender to the US after a few nights of hesitant snowball fights and Christmas carols. Wharton shows you the horror of war and the humanity of the boys (on both sides) fighting it.

Especially timely with my nephew in Afghanistan right now...

    			  Dear John,
You've done it again - taken all the Irving ingredients (wrestling, bears, farting dogs, writers, neurotic parenting, severed limbs, etc) thrown them up in the air and let them come down in a new motif for your latest book. I'm not complaining. These elements make me feel comforted and remind me that I'm in the hands of a master. And yes, I needed reminding. Especially at the end, but we'll talk about that later.

I really enjoyed the first section of the book. The setting of the logging camp, the cookhouse, the crusty old river drivers and the dangerous unlawful atmosphere transported me to a world I would normally never know. How could you not love Cookie, Ketchum, Injun Jane and everyone else just trying to get by such a cruel and harsh setting?
When we left I was disappointed but then I found myself absorbed in the North End of Boston and found new characters to love. I wanted to be in the Italian kitchen cooking dinner for the local every night.
Then we went to the midwest and I felt that hint of disappointment again. Things ebb and flow through the rest of the book - there are episodes that are classic Irving -funny and heartwarming - and others that are over indulgent and repetitive but I kept going expecting you to reward me in the end. I'm still waiting for that reward.

I was shocked to read such a boring, anticlimactic, safe, fairy-tale ending. You know that nightmare that you are running down a hall and the hall just keeps getting longer and you'll never reach that door at the end? That was the last segment of your book. I kept reading and reading but the page numbers didn't seem to be moving.

That being said - even a flawed Irving is still better than many other writers' best work. This is a drastic improvement over The Fourth Hand, so I don't want to discourage you. I'm a life long Red Sox fan so I know what its like to come back each year with new hope. When the next configuration of the Irving ingredients comes out - I'll be there!
Love,
Jen

Oh my, my, my! I really don’t even know where to begin with a review of “Last Night at Twisted River.” Was it great? No. Was it good? Yeah. Was it bad? Certainly not. It was … well, it was John Irving being uber-John Irving with all of the “usual suspects” making a cameo appearance:

-	New England setting: Check
-	Infidelity: Check
-	A Brief Stint at Exeter: Check
-	Fear of Losing a Child: Check, check, and double-check
-	Bears: Check
-	Wrestling: Check
-	Dismemberment of a limb or body part: Check
-	Semi-colons galore: Big checkeroo!

The fact is I love John Irving and will pretty much forgive him anything, including his last two novels – “The Fourth Hand” (which peters out and almost collapses in on itself) and “Until I Find You” (which desperately needed a 200 page shave). “Twisted River” falls prey to some of John’s excesses, but it is, in many ways, a return to form for, in my opinion, one of America’s greatest living writers. "Twisted River" doesn’t have the punch, the weight, the humor, or the sensitivity of “Owen Meany,” “Garp,” “Cider House,” or “Hotel New Hampshire;” however, it will please people who love John Irving for being John Irving.

“Twisted River” spans five decades and tells the story of a cook and his son who live on the run from a “crazed” New England cop after they accidentally kill the deputy’s girlfriend. The inciting event, killing the girlfriend who they mistake (grab your hats John Irving fans!) for a bear, is a great set-up. The problem is that Carl, the drunken, renegade cop who is supposedly pursuing them, is such a NON-character in the book that I never really bought into the conceit that he was someone to be feared. Irving is a talented creator of character and situation, but Carl is simply not ominous or “crazed” enough for me to believe that he would pursue two men over two countries through five decades. Although a lot of fantastic things transpire while the cook and his son are “on the lamb,” the reason for their fugitive life just never seemed real or truly threatening to me until the VERY late denouement.

If Carl is underdeveloped to the point of anemia, the character of Ketchum, a river driver who befriends the cook and aids in his flight, is a spectacularly well-developed character. Ketchum is a beautifully flawed character who truly becomes the emotional center of the book. He is a perfect John Irving character – colorful, impulsive, brooding, conflicted, and damaged.

When not focused on Ketchum, “Twisted River” is at its best when the author writes about writing. The cook’s son, Danny, ultimately becomes a world famous writer, very much akin to John Irving himself. I’ve always thought that John is one of the best metafictional writers writing today; that is, he consummately writes about characters who write. You can tell Irving has so much fun with the metafictional components of this book, deliberately blurring the lines between Danny’s fiction and his own.

All in all, I agree with many of the reviews already posted on goodreads. The book starts slow, ends polemically, but has a substantial and meaty middle. It had some elements I simply loved and many parts that I could have done without. It is a love letter to people who like John Irving, but not the book I would recommend to someone coming to the author for the very first time.
(less)

Thanks for reading this so I won't have to...or at least saving me the price of a hardcover. I'm disappointed that the follow up to TTW wasn't better but this just goes to show that when I finally get around to writing that awesome first novel I should just stop and rest on my laurels.

I've been debating about Her Fearful Symmetry...I loved Time Traveler's Wife and I'm afraid that this one is going to be a let down. It hard to lower your expectations even when you know you should. I'll be watching for your review so I know if I should go for it or wait for paperback.

I think you will like Lucia - its kind of a female PG Wodehouse with similar silly antics but yet nothing ever really happens.

I have a hard time getting into audio books (with the exception of Jim Dale's Harry Potter readings. Fab-u-lous!) but my favorite podcast, Books On The Nightstand, recommended this in audio and I decided to give it a try. Neil Gaiman reads the book himself which I think adds a lot to the experience. Its a YA story but definitely enjoyable for all ages. I listened to the story of Nobody Owens on my way to and from work and I found myself sitting in the parking lot or the driveway waiting for a chapter to end. Perfect for the Halloween season with ghosts, werewolves, murderers, but more importantly, characters that you care about. A great way to pass the commute.
