Lyrical, tour de force-y writing about the Irish and African American "sandhogs" who built tunnels connecting Brooklyn to New York in the 19th century. One of those rare historical novels where the research feels of a shining piece with the world created--in this case, NYC nearing the turn of the century.

A great and moving portrait of a Central American country in limbo after war and torture. The entire book seems to take place in a twilight, and in an Orwellian aftermath where everyone is secretive and paralyzed. Which makes the love story framing it more poignant. Thanks to my friend Jen for getting me interested.
