Got this book for Christmas about 4 or 5 years ago, and finally sat down to read it. Two sentence summary: A layer cake of six stories taking place in six different times (and in six different forms): mid 1800's Oceania via journal, 1930's Belgium vi ...more

"what a good book. i wasn't really prepared for the end---it happened very quickly but i think sometimes i get too excited about the endings of books and then i skip important things by accident.

I was really surprised that he could write a book worse than the previous one.

First of all, it's bad enough that he picked possibly the worst place to split between the two novels; all the Mule stuff should have been in the same book, IMHO.

This book has some good ideas, and some fun plots to follow, but HEY, did you hear about Harry Seldon, and how he invented Psychohistory? It happened in the first book, but don't worry about accidentally forgetting it, you'll get a full rehash every ...more

As per uze, (don't know how to spell it), Pratchett is funny. Unfortunately he's leaning a bit heavy on the easy concepts/jokes in this one, I think. It gets into some Small Gods/American Gods themes towards the end, which is ALWAYS good, but otherwi ...more

It's hard not to compare this book to Oryx and Crake, so I won't try to avoid it. O&C set up the scientific/social premise for your genre-standard post-apocalyptic world, and gave us a protagonist who was a flawed everyman who was close enough to ...more

Kind of disappointing. I mean, the premise is nice, but there are just WAY, WAY too many out-of-touch "rock-n-roll" jokes. I love Pratchett, and his humor is always great, but I'd much rather read his character or plot-based humor, rather than a cava ...more
