OMG. borrowed this book from Amy when I first moved to NY (March) and just now finished it (July). somewhat of a slow burn and definitely not as exciting as cavalier and clay. I hear the Cohen Brothers have optioned the script, so I'm looking forward to John Goodman & Chris Eyre playing half brothers who are also salty cops in the tundra. Fargo meets film noir....less

sigh. borrowed from where i was housesitting, i had to leave it behind. a confusing book, but satisfying, every chapter is a different story, with the same lead character - "I" - thou I is always doing different things, and representing different characters all together - one an international troublemaker trying to ditch a body, one a young boy going to live with at his farm owner's house for the summer, one a man in love with a woman drawing on the cold beach in front of the prison. every other chapter 'i' is reading these stories, and trying to find the ends of them with another 'other reader.' despite the many stories the tone is consistent and Calvino satisfies. looking foward to finding it on a used shelf somewhere and finishing it!

just re-read? this book (no real recollection of reading it the first time), and it's great. makes me want to eat mushrooms and live in the woods in Washington running a hot dog stand or some other semi-legitimate profession, be a hippy and think about the meaning of existing in the world. According to Amanda, the lead, it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you do it with style. im in full support. a great casual read, with some steamy sex scenes and thoughtful rants about pan/jesus/the universe/the infinite goof and the meaning of it all. (as always for robbins) unfortunately, I nearly destroyed this copy of the book in the reading (already a tattered and smoke-smelling edition from 1976 with a much better cover than that shown), so i can't really lend it to you....less
