Volcano by Shūsaku Endō

"A volcano resembles human life. In youth it gives rein to its passions, and burns with fire. It spurts out lava. But when it grows old, it assumes the burden of those past evil deeds, and it turns as quiet as a grave. You younger men can hardly f...

I don’t usually read prize winning novels – the short-listed ones somehow always seem more appealing – but there was something about the idea of an American ‘state-of-the-nation’ novel that appealed. After all, we live in weird times. But, unfortunat ...more

This is a book that you won’t easily forget. It’s a stylised dystopian caper, set in a fictional Limerick of the near-future, full of drunks, low-rent criminals and gang violence. It’s a unique world made less unsettling by the lyrical, vibrant way i ...more

There’s something curiously passive about Julian Barnes. ‘Arthur & George’ is wonderful, as is most of ‘Sense of an Ending’, and he’s nothing less than technically assured. But I didn’t get on with this at all. It’s essentially a biopic of Shosta ...more

"NEWEST REVIEW AFTER HAVING FINISHED THE BOOK:

The end is a relief and a revelation; with the end came my thirst of reading it again. After all, it's pretty amusing.

Charming story about an adolescent girl who moves in with her friend after her grandmother dies. Liked it - warm, simply written, with a just a splash of magic realism to blur the edges.

G.K. Chesterton
“The poor have been rebels, but they have never become anarchists: they have got more interest than anyone in there being some decent government. The poor man has a stake in the country, the rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all.”
