I found this book in a book/coffee shop in Langley, BC on the mainland. I've recently started knitting again after giving it a break for a couple of years and so I was interested to read this little book.

It chronicles the day to day life of a mother trying to knit her son a sweater. But it's much more than a diary of 'what I dd today". the author dips into the rich history of knitting, weaving, spinning and beading - all crafts enjoyed and made by womn over eons of time. She intersperses historical and cultural bites of information and influences from culture to culture and down to our time. Each bit of information ties in with the particular stage of sweater and its problems hat she is experiencing at the moment.

Yesterday I went to one of the monthly lectures at our Royal BC Museum. The talk was about Emily Carr's writing which she did later in life when she could no longer paint. Over her years of living and traveling among the peoples of the First Nations along our coasts, she wrote down many stories, events and daily life routines - both to use as inspiration for her paintings and to remember things in her diaries and letters. It was these materials she used as references later on when she began writing.

One of the earliest publishers wanted to use her stories as a series of books to be used by school children in classrooms as a way to highlight a renown Canadian artist. (She was born and lived here in Victoria for almost her entire life.) The problem in the 1940's and 1950's was censorship. Certain words, sentences, phrases, passages and in some cases - complete stories were censored and expurgated from the published book because of some of Emily's personal views. She had a strong dislike for the way Missionaries were treating Native Peoples so descriptions of those views were deleted. So were passages desccribing how the Indians burried their dead. And many more things like that.

The lady - Kathryn Bridge - who was giving the presentation yesterday is a curator at the museum and she was researching the letters, diaries and materials left to the Archives by Emily Carr's Estate. She started comparing the original manuscript of 'Klee Wyck' to what was available on book store shelves. She discovered that for more than 50 years the various publishers have obtained the rights for republiction of 'Klee Wyck' - not realizing they didn't have the complete, unabridged original version. They kept publishing the censored version. One publisher asked our curator to write the new introduction to their issue and she said she would only do this if the publisher put together the original manuscript with all the deleted parts reinstated. And they did. This is currently the only complete original version available in print.

Yesterday after the lecture at the museum there was a run for the gift shop to grab a copy of the book. It was incredible! I never saw 25 copies of anything disappear in three minutes flat!! No kidding!

The book is slim and its a collection of short stories. The quality of writing is far superior to many styles of writing today. Grab a copy if you can. I think you'll enjoy reading it.
