Great short novel by Leo Tolstoy and a breeze to read compared to "War and Peace" (not that I ever read "War and Peace" except for maybe the first 75 pages or so). Harold Bloom described it as "The greatest work of Literature in History" or something like that, but I thought it was quite good anyway. It is the story of a Muslim who is a separatist guerilla, who then falls out with his own commander and eventually sides with the Russians in hope of saving his family. This book was wonderful. It was written in the thirties before the author and his wife fled Germany to England and from there to the States and from there to Argentina, where they both committed suicide. It is about the poverty that engulfs the middle class as a result of hyper inflation and the deep divisions between the rich and the poor. The writing is beautiful and the surprise ending is a knock out. At a breezy 253 pages it is a light read, though a heavy subject (in a good way. This book is so painful to read that I can't stand it. But I can never give up on a book after I have read more than 50 pages. The writing is dreadful. The '70s feminism is so tiresome. I bought it because I am interested in the music business of the '60s and 70s, but boy does this stink. Even if you are interested in Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King, the bad writing will drive you to your knees. And the book is huge, 592 pages. Stay away from this book. Save your money. ]]>
