I love Christopher Isherwood's writing style. His sentences are beautifually crafted and they flow so well. Not only that, but they can contain a lot of information, very pithy, very thoughtful. This story was quite entertaining and there's a lot of underlying humor. I would really like to have given this book much higher praise. It's a solid story, but it was a tough read for me. I would have liked the book more if it had been structured differently. The 115 pages of Tom's diary followed by 110 pages of Andy's journal could have been split up and interspersed to make a better story. I liked the commentary on poverty and the discussion of class differences, but felt this was a good opportunity to also include more discussion about the discrimination felt but gays and lesbians. I would have liked a little more detail about what it was exactly that Andy did for a living with Demotica. I would like to know why he did not write more in his journal about his relationship with Tom. In fact, I felt that much more emotion could be added to make a more moving story. Finally, I also felt that the ending, though a big surprise, was incomplete and disappointing.
