This sequel to Al Capone Does My Shirts retains much of the charm of the first book, changing focus somewhat but still depicting some moral dilemmas and heartwarming resolutions without being at all preachy. 12-year-old Moose’s family is almost normal now that his autistic sister is at a special school in San Francisco. Normal, that is, for a family living on Alcatraz in 1935, when a handful of families of guards inhabited one side of the island while the most incorrigible criminals lived on the other. Moose wants to please everyone, and normally does, but he’s getting pulled every which way and his friends are starting to get mad at him. The relationships between the kids are priceless, and the individuals are deftly drawn. I hadn’t thought of the first book as being the start of a series, but now I hope that there are more installments so we can follow Moose as he gets older.

Lexicography is an old-fashioned, staid topic, and Samuelson Dictionaries remains a bastion of erudition a century after its founding. Billy feels fortunate to have landed a job there after graduating from college with a degree in philosophy. He is getting used to living on his own for the first time, though the silence at Samuelson and the nerdiness of his co-workers doesn’t give him much of a chance to meet many people. A tentative friendship springs up with Mona, the only other young editor at work, when they come across a series of puzzling citation slips that reference a book called The Broken Teaglass that doesn’t seem to exist. Their sleuthing doesn’t come across as being terrible shocking, though they do uncover an unsolved mystery; it is more a slow discovery about themselves along with some meditations about the use of words and language.
