3.75/5

Reasons why I didn't enjoy this as much as I'd wanted:

* Couldn't connect to the characters
* The plot was a bit slow and sleepy at times
* The ending is not an ending and the climax felt a bit too easy and convenient. I did however like Cate's un...more

“Most people in Atlanta don't have an accent. It's pretty urban. A lot of people speak gangsta, though," I add jokingly.
"Fo' shiz," he replies in his polite English accent.
I spurt orangey-red soup across the table. St. Clair gives a surprised ha-HA kind of laugh, and I'm laughing too, the painful kind like abdominal crunches. He hands me a napkin to wipe my chin. "Fo'. Shiz." He repeats it solemnly.
Cough cough. "Please don't ever stop saying that. It's too-" I gasp. "Much."
"You oughtn't to have said that. Now I shall have to save it for special occasions."
"My birthday is in February." Cough choke wheeze. "Please don't forget.”

Sarah Alderson
“This is not a choice. I either choose not to become a Hunter and get killed in some hideous manner or I choose to become a Hunter and get killed in some hideous manner.”
Sarah Alderson, Fated

Kirsten Hubbard
“A person's actions could be interpreted in a number of ways, depending on who was watching. Their viewpoints were simply skewed by their beliefs, their prejudices, and their private desires. Their personal kaleidoscopes. I couldn't judge them, of course. I was the same way.”

Caragh M. O'Brien
“Would you have this?” the Protectorat hissed at his son.

Rafael's gaze narrowed in a slow inspection while she stared defiantly back. Rafael's gaze faltered, shot briefly toward Leon, and then down. His answer was obvious: no.

And in spite of everything, in the face of all the other more important dangers that threatened her, it still stung that someone, some boy, found her ugly. Gaia burned with sudden hate for all of them.

The Protectorat saw. He smiled slightly.

“I thought not,” said the Protectorat, releasing her with a flick. He turned back toward his family. “I can't thrust her on any family I know, no matter what her genes are. She's a freak, not a hero. I'd
rather make a hero out of Myrna Silk.”

Leon had been standing tensely throughout this exchange. “I'd take Gaia,” Leon said, his low voice
resonating in the space.”
Caragh M. O'Brien, Birthmarked

“We could liberate a million trophies. We could fill every river to the brim. But it would never fully substitute for liberating ourselves.”
