At certain points of the story, I was worried there would be too strong (or obvious) a parallel between Thor and Jesus or Adam. But the story settles on the issue of immortality; as I read it, what is the role of father and son, if the son can never outlive the father--and thus never become a patriarch himself?
Once in a while some of the dialogue is a little corny: “Make way! Or way will be made through you!”…I’ll have to remember that one when I’m on a crowded subway platform. But overall, a very enjoyable story about the God of Thunder.
The world of Mouse Guard is both conceptually rich and visually interesting. Therefore, it is ripe for plucking by vendors like movie studios and toy manufacturers. But no one will be able to accurately reproduce what Petersen has done on these pages, and that’s what makes it a truly great novel.

Just because the main characters are running around in tights, there's no need to ask the reader excuse even more implausibility in the story's plot. (Manipulating Batman with subliminal messages? Really?)
5 stars for Jim Lee's amazingly detailed illustration, 2 stars for Loeb's uninspired story.

Mohammed wrote: "Heh i hate Payback with alot of emotion. Not to diss your fav but you can understand why when you have read The Hunter."

Mohammed -- I thought I'd revisit this discussion, since i did get around to reading The Hunter a few weeks back. Loved it. Still love the flick, though! I thought the director captured the noir mood, and the film has that wham-bam twist of an ending that's not in the book.
The Payback movie posters say "Get ready to root for the bad guy", but Parker (in the book) is way more of a baddie than Porter (in the movie). At one point, he accidentally kills some poor woman just because he wants to use her store as a lookout!
I knew I was going to like this guy when Stark/Westlake describes him in the first few pages:
"The office women looked at him and shivered...they knew how he would fall on a woman in the night. Like a tree."
Hot-damn, NOBODY writes like this anymore!
