A typical Jodi Picoult novel. That being said, it was entertaining and kept my interest.

I almost gave this five stars. I did enjoy the complexity and intrigue of the story. Relating a story from so many points of view and shifting back and forth from the past to the present so many times was a little hard to get used to, but Lippman did a commendable job with the various time periods and the various characters. I found the ending a bit too pat but the book definitely held my interest and I cared about what happened to the characters.

I loved this book!! Okay I am a sucker for a heart wrenching story and/or an animal story. This was both but it was also narrated by a dog! I love animals and tend to treat my pets as if they were human with human thoughts and reasoning so this book was almost perfect for me. I am not a fan of car racing but that did not matter. Enzo is a lovable, compassionate, insightful and intelligent dog. He loves his master and family unconditionally as dogs tend to do. I thought it was cleverly written and Stein did a great job of maintaining focus and the character of Enzo.

The subject matter is sad and upsetting - racial discrimination in the South after WWII. The book made me realize how ingrained the prejudice was/is. I liked the characters, except for the old man father in law. The style of a different narrator for each chapter was effective and an interesting way to get to know the characters. The reader learns about them in first person, through their own thoughts and feelings. It is definitely a book worth reading!

Although the story is sad and disturbing, I loved the book. And I loved the way de Rosnay went from the past to the present and then made the connections between them. The characters came alive for me, and the book made me cry. The final scene is touching and memorable and riveting.

I love Pat Conroy and have read every book he has written. I was very disappointed in this book. While there were glimmers of his wonderful writing style, I found the story trite and disjointed. It seemed that he tried to keep too many plot lines going at the same time. The characters were flat and resembled caricatures as opposed to people a reader could identify with. Not up to Conroy's usual standard!

I did not care for the style of writing in this book at all. I ask myself why I bothered to finish reading it since I did not really care about the characters or what happened to them. The plot was contrived and false.
