I was very excited to read this book, thinking it would combine design research with design history and excellent prose. There is excellent prose, but the rest of the book is a little weak, like it could be in the bathroom of someone who had an immaculate bathroom and design-taste. There would be all-white walls, with maybe some paneling to the 2/3's dado (also painted white), and then baskets and shelves, like the bathroom is a place for living even if you're on the beach. The information was weak, and often anecdotal, but enjoyable to read quickly on the subway. ...less

I have read all of Steve Martin's books, and I really enjoyed this one. Much like his other work, Born Standing Up is deceptive in that it is funny, and seems funny all along, but Martin's slow, methodical writing style manages to catch you with humor, and addresses the great sadness and despair of his experiences, as well as the philosophical points he studied and that have shaped his life. Steve Martin is such a skilled writer, and is able to convey the depths of human emotion through his seemingly simple sentence structures. I love him, and, learning in this book that he love e e cummings makes so much sense. Shopgirl is still his best work, but this autobiography is a great read--read it in a day--and the varying artists (in the very wide sense of the word, not just painters) Martin dated, lived and worked with is amazing. The book has only convinced me even more how much I respect him....less
