News of the World by Paulette Jiles
Captive children, feral children, neglected children, incarcerated children, abused children, slaves. I have accidentally (or serendipitously, maybe) met all of these in my books over the last few weeks.

The child in this book was 10-year-old..." Read more of this review »

What a treat to read this after My Name is Lucy Barton. Strout is one of my favorite writers. She understands the human condition and relates stories that hit home.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
"Story of a poor family in turn of the twentieth century Brooklyn and how Francie, the heroine, tries to better herself. Smith gives us a loving portrait of that time, place and characters and is not afraid to tackle a sexual predator and an unwed..." Read more of this review »

Oh my! Dirty bars, the gathering place of Denis Johnson's characters, hold a lot of secrets. We have murderers, rapists, robbers, with their girlfriends, in these stories. It's a gritty ride, but spellbinding. Pure grit. Read it in one sitting.
A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines
" I admit. The end got to me too. I'm surprised I haven't heard more about this book. "

Anna Akhmatova
“I have a lot of work to do today;
I need to slaughter memory,
Turn my living soul to stone
Then teach myself to live again.”
Anna Akhmatova, The Complete Poems of Anna Akhmatova

Yaa Gyasi
“We believe the one who has power. He is the one who gets to write the story. So when you study history you must ask yourself, Whose story am I missing?, Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice could come forth? Once you have figured that out, you must find that story too. From there you get a clearer, yet still imperfect, picture.”
Yaa Gyasi, Homegoing

J.M. Coetzee
“To the last we will have learned nothing. In all of us, deep down, there seems to be something granite and unteachable. No one truly believes, despite the hysteria in the streets, that the world of tranquil certainties we were born into is about to be extinguished. No one can accept that an imperial has been annihilated by men with bows and arrows and rusty old guns who live in tents and never wash and cannot read or write. And who am I to jeer at life-giving illusions? Is there any better way to pass these last days than in dreaming of a saviour with a sword who will scatter the enemy hosts and forgive us the errors that have been committed by others in our name and grant us a second chance to build our earthly paradise?”
J.M. Coetzee, Waiting for the Barbarians

H.P. Lovecraft
“The world is indeed comic, but the joke is on mankind.”
H.P. Lovecraft

Lillian Hellman
“People change and forget to tell each other.”
Lillian Hellman
