          <body><![CDATA[Suspect the world does not need another review of Mary Karr’s newest memoir, but I do have some scattered thoughts on it. I feel, however, that they must be prefaced by multiple caveats, which may be the scattered thoughts in disguise. Caveat one: I’ve not read any of her other books. Have seen ...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/Suspect%20the%20world%20does%20not%20need%20another%20review%20of%20Mary%20Karr%E2%80%99s%20newest%20memoir,%20but%20I%20do%20have%20some%20scattered%20thoughts%20on%20it.%20I%20feel,%20however,%20that%20they%20must%20be%20prefaced%20by%20multiple%20caveats,%20which%20may%20be%20the%20scattered%20thoughts%20in%20disguise.%20Caveat%20one:%20I%E2%80%99ve%20not%20read%20any%20of%20her%20other%20books.%20Have%20seen%20occasional%20poems%20of%20hers%20in%20magazines.%20Caveat%20two:%20She%20studied%20with%20a%20poet%20I%20also%20studied%20with,%20who%20makes%20a%20couple%20of%20appearances%20in%20this%20book%20as%20she%20begins%20to%20ascend%20into%20the%20poetry%20firmament.%20Caveat%20three:%20Much%20of%20this%20book%20is%20about%20poetry%20and%20the%20journey%20toward%20being%20a%20career%20poet,%20an%20occupation%20I%E2%80%99ve%20abandoned%20(fodder%20for%20a%20different%20blog%20entry%2Fessay,%20but%20much%20of%20what%20Dan%20Nester%20writes%20here%20is%20true%20for%20me%20as%20well),%20so%20I%20tend%20to%20view%20that%20part%20of%20her%20story%20with%20a%20jaded%20eye.%20Caveat%20four:%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20recovery%20story,%20and%20I%E2%80%99ve%20never%20had%20a%20serious%20problem%20with%20alcohol;%20aside%20from%20some%20typical%20twentysomething%20years%20of%20social%20binge%20drinking,%20I%20grew%20up%20to%20be%20a%20teetotaler.%20That%20being%20said,%20I%20do%20come%20from%20an%20alcoholic%20family,%20so%20I%E2%80%99ve%20witnessed%20quite%20a%20bit%20of%20what%20she%20describes.%20Caveat%20five:%20The%20book%20was%20loaned%20to%20me%20by%20my%20friend%20Father%20A,%20who%E2%80%99s%20a%20Paulist%20priest%20and%20someone%20I%20have%20a%20deep%20admiration%20for.%20Lest%20I%20sound%20like%20Ann%20Lamott,%20who%20always%20seems%20to%20be%20quoting%20her%20%E2%80%9Cpriest%20friend%E2%80%9D,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20just%20say%20that%20Father%20A%20was%20a%20writing%20teacher%20in%20seminary%20and%20reads%20a%20lot%20of%20interesting%20things.%20%20And%20finally,%20caveat%20six:%20I%20was%20working%20at%20a%20bookstore%20around%20the%20time%20the%20big%20wave%20of%20memoirs%20began,%20and%20I%E2%80%99ve%20been%20appalled%20by%20some%20of%20the%20terrible%20writing%20that%E2%80%99s%20come%20out%20of%20this%20genre%20and%20the%20Augusten%20Burroughs,%20%E2%80%9CI%E2%80%99ll%20write%20five%20memoirs%20before%20I%E2%80%99m%20fifty!%E2%80%9D%20megalomaniacal%20style%20of%20rubbernecking,%20navel%20gazing%20memoir%20(no,%20they%20are%20not%20all%20like%20this,%20but%20you%20know%20what%20I%E2%80%99m%20talking%20about).%20However,%20I%E2%80%99m%20particularly%20interested%20in%20female%20writing%20about%20spirituality%20at%20the%20moment,%20so%20I%E2%80%99ve%20been%20trying%20to%20overcome%20my%20memoir-phobia%20in%20order%20to%20read%20some%20sublime%20stuff%20(Dorothy%20Day%E2%80%99s%20The%20Long%20Loneliness,%20Theresa%20of%20Avila,%20Hildegard%20Von%20Bingen,%20etc)%20and%20some%20utterly%20appalling,%20smug,%20irritating,%20trite%20anti-feminist%20crap%20(Ahem,%20Eat,%20Pray,%20Love.%20Michael%20K%20over%20at%20Dlisted%20refers%20to%20that%20one%20as%20%E2%80%9CQueef,%20Fart,%20Poop%E2%80%9D,%20which%20just%20about%20sums%20it%20up%20for%20me).%0D%0A%0D%0AKarr%20is%20clearly%20a%20better%20writer%20than%20Elizabeth%20Gilbert,%20and%20no%20matter%20how%20much%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20get%20into%20some%20aspects%20of%20her%20book,%20she%20can%20turn%20a%20phrase%20and%20tell%20a%20story%20%E2%80%94%20which%20ought%20to%20be%20plenty%20enough%20for%20a%20memoir.%20The%20thing%20about%20this%20book,%20however,%20is%20the%20sense%20of%20weariness%20about%20the%20enterprise%20(and%20this%20may%20be%20my%20misinterpretation%20having%20never%20read%20her%20other%20memoirs).%20There%E2%80%99s%20a%20kind%20of%20steady%20narrative%20interruption%20throughout%20where%20she%20stops%20in%20order%20to%20have%20a%20flashback,%20but%20these%20often%20feel%20like%20retreads%20of%20stories%20told%20elsewhere,%20and%20that%E2%80%99s%20again%20coming%20from%20someone%20who%20hasn%E2%80%99t%20read%20said%20stories%20before.%20Nonetheless,%20the%20vividness%20of%20some%20things%20here%20is%20irresistible,%20and%20I%20like%20the%20fact%20that%20she%E2%80%99s%20hard%20on%20herself;%20real%20writers%20are%20really%20fucking%20hard%20on%20ourselves,%20and%20in%20my%20experience%20we%20don%E2%80%99t%20really%20like%20ourselves%20all%20that%20much,%20which%20she%20gets.%20After%20recovery,%20however,%20Karr%20starts%20praying%20%E2%80%94%20I%E2%80%99m%20totally%20fine%20with%20that%20%E2%80%94%20but%20she%20also%20starts%20loving%20herself,%20and%20gets%20a%20great%20job%20(tenure%20track!)%20and%20publishes%20books%20(interestingly,%20she%20does%20the%20same%20thing%20I%20complained%20about%20in%20regards%20to%20Julie%20and%20Julia%20and%20says%20%E2%80%9Cblah%20blah%20you%E2%80%99re%20not%20a%20writer%20until%20you%20publish%20a%20book%E2%80%9D,%20then%20repeats%20several%20times%20that%20the%20book%20was%20ignored,%20although%20it%20lead%20to%20accolades,%20tenure,%20better%20publication%20of%20her%20next%20book,%20meeting%20famous%20writers%20et%20cetera;%20I%20was%20confused%20about%20this%20part%20of%20the%20narrative).%20She%20has%20a%20torrid%20affair%20with%20David%20Foster%20Wallace%20(though%20her%20writing%20about%20it%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20feel%20exploitative%20%E2%80%94%20I%20had%20to%20re-read%20her%20description%20of%20him%20a%20couple%20of%20times%20before%20the%20faint%20ping%20of%20recognition%20went%20off),%20she%20becomes%20a%20responsible%20mother,%20forgives%20her%20own%20mother%20for%20being%20insane%20and%20drunk,%20and%20so%20on.%20It%20feels%20like%20a%20rather%20pat%20%E2%80%9Chappy%20ending%E2%80%9D,%20and%20dampened%20my%20enthusiasm%20for%20the%20book.%20Her%20conversion%20story%20only%20takes%20up%20less%20than%20a%20forth%20of%20the%20whole%20thing,%20and%20she%20seems%20to%20have%20picked%20Catholicism%20kind%20of%20randomly%20%E2%80%94%20she%20complains%20the%20Episcopal%20church%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20heated%20enough%20in%20winter%20%E2%80%94%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20kind%20of%20bunched%20together%20version%20of%20what%20must%20have%20been%20a%20pretty%20significant%20experience%20for%20her.%20I%20found%20myself%20liking%20Mary%20Karr%20the%20writer%20more%20than%20Mary%20Karr%E2%80%99s%20book,%20if%20that%20makes%20any%20sense.%20Perhaps%20it%20just%20needed%20a%20more%20merciless%20editor%20who%20might%20have%20trimmed%20down%20some%20of%20the%20digressive%20passages,%20but%20as%20much%20as%20the%20writing%20itself%20was%20compelling,%20much%20of%20the%20story%20left%20me%20a%20little%20confused.%0D%0A%0D%0A">more...</a>]]></body>

          <body><![CDATA[I'm changing my review of my own book from four stars to five just because I can. Sheesh, every other author does it!<br/><br/>To be honest, I know <em>Slanted and Enchanted</em> isn't perfect. I'm not surprised that many reviewers have gripes about what I chose <em>not</em> to write about -- after all, as I admit ...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/I'm%20changing%20my%20review%20of%20my%20own%20book%20from%20four%20stars%20to%20five%20just%20because%20I%20can.%20Sheesh,%20every%20other%20author%20does%20it!%0D%0A%0D%0ATo%20be%20honest,%20I%20know%20%3Ci%3ESlanted%20and%20Enchanted%3C%2Fi%3E%20isn't%20perfect.%20I'm%20not%20surprised%20that%20many%20reviewers%20have%20gripes%20about%20what%20I%20chose%20%3Ci%3Enot%3C%2Fi%3E%20to%20write%20about%20--%20after%20all,%20as%20I%20admit%20in%20the%20introduction,%20indie%20is%20essentially%20definable%20only%20to%20the%20individual%20who%20participates%20in%20it,%20whether%20as%20an%20artist%20or%20as%20a%20spectator.%20So%20if%20you%20believe%20indie%20started%20in%20the%20jazz%20age,%20in%20the%20paleolithic,%20last%20week,%20in%20New%20York,%20London%20or%20Omaha,%20you%20are%20probably%20correct.%20And%20I%20know%20the%20book%20focuses%20a%20lot%20on%20west%20coast%20artists.%20All%20I%20can%20say%20about%20that%20is%20there%20seem%20to%20already%20be%20a%20%3Ci%3Elot%3C%2Fi%3E%20of%20books%20(and%20I've%20read%20many%20of%20them)%20about%20east%20coast%20indie%20scenes,%20which%20is%20great,%20but%20I%20didn't%20want%20to%20retread%20on%20already%20heavily%20tread%20ground.%20Much%20of%20how%20the%20book%20evolved%20was%20based%20on%20who%20I%20was%20able%20to%20interview,%20and%20%20I%20obviously%20had%20better%20access%20to%20folks%20on%20this%20side%20of%20the%20country.%20Does%20that%20mean%20I%20have%20a%20bias%3F%20Of%20course%20I%20do%20--%20all%20writers%20do.%20There%20is%20no%20such%20thing%20as%20objective%20nonfiction,%20sorry%20to%20say.%20Wouldn't%20that%20be%20boring%20to%20read%3F%0D%0A%0D%0AAs%20to%20the%20very%20blurry%20line%20between%20consumers%20of%20indie%20and%20makers,%20I%20do%20believe%20the%20current%20trend%20toward%20broadening%20out%20the%20tools%20of%20indie%20via%20the%20internet%20is%20going%20to%20obfuscate%20that%20further%20(a%20historical%20pattern%20I%20tried%20to%20explore%20in%20the%20book%20and%20have%20been%20blogging%20about%20lately%20on%20my%20website).%20Anyone%20can%20make%20art%20independently,%20and%20cheaply,%20and%20easily%20in%202009.%20To%20choose%20only%20to%20witness%20that%20rather%20than%20jumping%20in%20seems%20lazy,%20but%20I'm%20as%20lazy%20as%20anyone%20else,%20so%20perhaps%20my%20rather%20jaded%20take%20on%20the%20hipster%20phenomenon%20(see%20chapter%2010%20for%20more%20on%20that)%20is%20just%20fatigue%20from%20watching%20scene%20after%20scene%20attract%20followers%20who%20poke%20fun%20at%20something%20others%20have%20worked%20hard%20on.%20I'm%20tired%20of%20going%20to%20shows%20and%20hearing%20people%20shit%20talking%20in%20the%20back%20of%20the%20room.%20%0D%0A%0D%0AOkay,%20so%20by%20now%20you%20may%20think%20I'm%20old%20and%20cranky,%20which%20is%20true.%20So%20what's%20good%20about%20my%20book%3F%20Well,%20I%20think%20it's%20interesting.%20I%20spent%20two%20years%20researching%20and%20writing%20it,%20and%20the%20one%20thing%20I%20never%20got%20was%20bored%20(obsessed,%20cranky%20and%20occasionally%20crippled%20with%20carpal%20tunnel,%20I%20got%20those%20things).%20I%20interviewed%20people%20whose%20commitment%20to%20living%20independent%20creative%20lives%20and%20inspiring%20others%20to%20do%20the%20same%20was%20humbling.%20I%20got%20to%20explore%20the%20worlds%20of%20indie%20music,%20publishing,%20comics,%20zines%20and%20crafting,%20and%20in%20the%20process%20I%20saw%20how%20integral%20all%20those%20forms%20can%20be.%20And%20I%20hope%20I%20presented%20a%20clear%20(though,%20yeah,%20admittedly%20biased)%20picture%20of%20the%20subculture%20that%20has%20nurtured%20my%20own%20creative%20life%20for%20many%20years.%20This%20book%20is%20not%20about%20me%20in%20the%20long%20run,%20it's%20about%20the%20people%20who%20inspired%20people%20like%20me%20to%20try%20making%20independent%20art%20ourselves.%20I%20haven't%20given%20up%20on%20indie%20after%20being%20around%20it%20for%2020+%20years.%20And%20if%20this%20book%20in%20turn%20might%20just%20have%20a%20sliver%20of%20a%20chance%20of%20doing%20the%20same%20thing%20for%20someone%20else,%20that's%20enough%20to%20make%20me%20happy%20I%20got%20the%20chance%20to%20write%20it.%20">more...</a>]]></body>
