Attempts to dispel the "canonical version" of Argentine history that blames the Argentine state for preventing industrial growth in the country before Peronism going all the way back to independence. Rocchi argues that there actually was an industrial boom in Argentina from 1870-1930 and that the state used protectionist policies and allowed entrepreneurs access to credit (for example through state bank authorized loans), thus promoting industrialization. Some interesting chapters on the development of some industries in Argentina, such as shoes, tobacco, and beer, and the creation of a consumer-driven society in Argentina, but really slows down at the end when discussing industrial financing and political debates over protectionism vs. free trade. Some sparks of life, but overall not incredibly engaging.
