Rabbit Angstrom sure is a douchebag, but Updike was excellent. Almost TOO excellent at times - sometimes I longed for a sentence that wasn't so goddamned perfect. But all writers should have such problems...
I detected some Joyce influence and dug it. The sequence when Janice gets drunk after Rabbit leaves the second time was haunting.
Won't be going straight to Rabbit Redux yet... I need a break from the bastard. (not you, Updike) ]]>

I'm excited this is finally out!
Was it worth the two year wait? Well written, but it seemed brief and I would've liked more on the actual recording process of the album, but she said up front it wouldn't be full of technical stuff that electronics-dorks would eat up. So inevitably I'm let down, but I've yet to read the Sheppard biography, which should fill in the holes. ]]>

I have to say I am quite disappointed in this book, however well written it is. Probably a lot of it went over my head - being as I know nothing about Latin American poetry. I did not come away at the end feeling as if I really knew who Arturo Belano and Ulises Lima really were, what kind of people they were really like. I'm assuming that was the point - as if their personalities are as elusive as the lost poet they are trying to find. (?) There were some beautiful sections - if I had the book with me I'd quote a few - and I did love the very first section narrated by the young poet... which is why I was disappointed at how less enthralling the rest of the novel was. Perhaps I'll read it again later in life and love it... I'll definitely give more of his novels a try because I loved 2666, and fortunately none of them are as long as this one. ]]>
