It got three stars for being a decent pageturner in the middle but overall, I'm not a huge fan of the genre and probably wouldn't read another by Abbott.

Not much to say about this book as it's very straightforward. I wanted to read it before I watched the movie. I must say that I never identify with guys like Chris McCandless. I think that he was arrogant, hopelessly naive, and incredibly selfish - that being said, it doesn't make his story any less tragic. I just feel very sorry for his family.
All in all a compelling read, even though I didn't identify with the protagonist at all. ...less

I really am not familiar with this portion of American history, but I joined a book club at work, and this is November's selection.
I was a little nervous through the first chapters, but the story picks up quickly and while I had some issues following the timeline, it was fascinating to see how much money was poured into the World's Fair, and how it influenced so much in our culture, and then the parallel of Henry Holmes, and how industrious a serial killer he was. I can't even imagine what living in those times was like; when a person could just disappear and the police could do absolutely nothing about it.
Overall I enjoyed this most, because it's something I wouldn't have picked up on my own, and I learned a lot about one of my favorite cities at the turn of the century....less
