For some reason, the first chapter didn’t grab me, but I happily devoured the rest of the book. It’s to Gregory’s credit that even though the situation became obvious before it was spelled out in the story, I wasn’t sure how it would be dealt with, or how I wanted it to be dealt with. Well-written. I’ll look for his next book.

Holds up decently well, though some nautical details (ranging from Royal Navy uniforms to how quickly Shandy becomes a competent sailor) are now, having devoured O’Brian, obviously incorrect or impossible. And even though they’re sorcerors, some characters have a deeper understanding of quantum physics than most 21st century Americans.
