Butler's vampire world is ruled by the Ina, a race that resembles the fictional vampire. Shori is a young vampire child who awakens at the beginning of the story with her memory wiped out. She finds out that her families have been destroyed, and she must learn who she is and how to take care of herself and reacquaint herself with her families and her tribe of symbionts who serve her and feed her. Butler is a great creator of worlds, a thorough writer, and one who does not shy from themes involving sexuality, outsider status, politics and race relations. There are scenes which may make more sensitive readers uncomfortable. I know that I'll be thinking about some of the issues raised in this book for a while. (less) "
