review from my Vox blog:
I requested this book because there was another Melanie Falick book I was interested in, and our library didnt have it. At first glance, I didn't think I'd find anything I liked in here. But when I read it again last night for the 2nd or 3rd time, I realized I have 3 post-its of noteworthy patterns!
I'd like to try reverse-bloom flower washclothes, I think those look so soft and pretty and would make a super gift. There are some things in here that i'd not really ever try like egg cozies! The scarfs and hats don't thrill me a lot either. The unisex knock-around cashmere pullover has a really charming construction with some of the stitches going around the other way. And then there's the cache-couer bergamo. I love the look of this. I'm really not sure how it would fit me, but I'm tempted to try it. I bought a shirt last spring that had a similar neckline and it really was romantic and pretty seeming, and I think this would even be nicer because of the heavier quality. It's in Muench Bergamo, which no one carries anymore, but I found a Rowan Bamboo tape that seems like it could be cool, with a little more sheen. There is also a perfect shawl that is very sweet looking with a pretty lace edge. And all the way through are weekend tips and recipes. Finally, I really like the cozy armchair socks. They have an afterhtought heel on them, and I really like the striping. I just think the construction of them looks easy and pretty. I may just need to own this book!...less

I saw this on the best seller's list at Knit Picks and was excited to see that our library had it. The nice thing about thsi book is that she uses yarns that are easily found at regular craft stores like JoAnn's, rather than stuff that's more hard to come by. Case in point, one of the pictures on the cover uses the same colorway of Moda Dea that I used in my first pair of socks.

I was just mostly curious what this technique involved, and how you worked with 2 circs for making socks. I do enjoy circular needles in general, but this technique doesn't look a LOT simpler than just using dpns. Since I own dpns already and no small circular tips, I'll probably continue on with the way I'm doing already, but it's nice to understand how this works.
There are some nice patterns in here, and the lace pattern on the leg of the Columbine Peak is very similar to the lace I did on my pink socks. There are instructions for a variety of things, including a basic sock. I think this could be a good gift for a first time sock knitter. I think personally, the instructions in Socks, Socks, Socks were easier for me to follow, but this is probably best for most newbies. There are tips for using circular or even 2 circular needles, neither technique I've tried yet. The Basic Chevron pattern is nice, ala Jaywalkers.
I didn't learn a whole lot, but I do think this is a nice book.

"This is a nice reference book. There wasn't any one section that really jumped out at me as "oh this is brilliant" but it was a nice overview of everything. If you have a chance to check it out of your library, it's worth looking at.

Having seen one of my fav knitting blogs talk about the Geek Spiral sweater, I anxiously awaited this book from the library.
But then the more I read about it online and in the book, I just wasn't as excited about actually making it. This book has so many unusual patterns in it. Defintely more towards making things just to be fashionable than my tastes run.
However, I did enjoy seeing some of the ideas, conceptualizing what it would take to make these things. For example, the construction of the yarn-over steak vest was really interesting. The basketweave scarf with ends that hang out is cool. The zip-off sweater that she wore when appearing on Knitty Gritty was fun to see how it's made (and I reocnigzed the slip-stitch intarsia kilt for the same reason).
There were a couple of huge fair isle that were interestng to see. And finally, the one I wish I could wear was a ballet t-shirt, but there's no way the medium/large would fit me, and it's a bit too complex for me to try and modify. I just really like the shaping in the tummy area and the cap sleeves I may photocopy it just in case I want to make it some day.

"Good second book to the series. Some of the happenings are sad, but it's really a good continuation, and I look forward to the next.
