"This book is moving at a glacial pace. That's not to say it's bad. Life is also providing little opportunity to read, so there's that. I'm going to take a break and catch up on some comics." — Feb 06, 2012 02:19pm

"Holmes and Watson dress in drag to solve a ballet academy murder in "The Adventure of the Dancing Men". Actually, I just made that up. The "dancing men" from the title end up being coded messages in this darker-than-usual tale (Watson actually comments about how this is one of their most disturbing cases) in which Holmes goes up against a Chicago gangster. Holmes solves the mystery, but not in time to save lives." — Jan 14, 2012 06:56pm

"...for all its apparent speed, the ship was almost perfectly silent, and he experienced an enervating, eerie feeling, as though the ancient warship, mothballed all those centuries, had somehow not yet fully woken up, and events within its sleek hull still moved to another, slower tempo, made half of dreams."

“No ninjas! How was that possible? Five daughters brought up at home without any ninjas! I never heard of such a thing. Your mother must have been quite a slave to your safety.”

“I toyed briefly with an image someone once mentioned to me, of a village in the shadow of a twin-peaked mountain. In the morning the sun rises. At lunch it sets behind the mountain. In the early afternoon it rises once more. The cocks crow for the second time, and later the sun sets again. No. One peak. Metaphors should not be belaboured.”
