A tale of torture and poetry from Iran. I lack background for the details of the revolution, but some things are universal. Reminds me of "One for the Road" by Harold Pinter.

52/52/09

Well told stories of the failed blue-collar world of the Midwest. Ms. Campbell achieves a remarkable cohesion in the collection - which surprised me as the longest story is still under30 pages.

51/52/2009

Oh! That voice! These stories, admittedly unpolished, have that same crazy, distinctive spark that we love so well. This would be an unfortunate introduction to the master, but for die hard Vonnegut fans it is one last hit.

48/52/09

Yummy gothic tales. I bought this in my H1N1 bookstore trip - you know, stocking up before you get dreadfully sick. I kinda wish I had waited to read it until febrile, as I bet it would be even creepier then.

47/52/2009

So I picked this up after the nyt review, and didn't finish it because after the first 2 stories, I found the rendering of the dialect to be painful and the writing flat. I think often authors often use kid characters to cover flat writing. I finished it to see what Oprah was so excited about, but it did not improve with more familiarity.

It's not that I need character development in short stories. It's just that reading unremittingly brutal images without any character development feels voyeristic.

46/52/2009
