Meh. The first two little stories/chapters were funny. I laughed out loud at chapter 2, the one about breastfeeding expert Gisselle Bundchen. But after that, the book was really boring. Some of the stories have nothing to do with her kids. Some of th ...more

This took a little while to get into, but, man, it's a good book! My husband suffers from Crohn's and I wanted to read this the moment I saw a review for it in the paper. It took my library 2.5 months to get it to my branch and I read it in one sitti ...more

The ending was very rushed and not too satisfying but overall I enjoyed the story. Reads just like a Bluford book.

“There's always a bit of suspense about the particular way in which a given school year will get off to a bad start.”

“Sure, okay, I'll pick up some cat litter. Anything else?"

"Watch your back, G." Then she hung up.

Hero paused in her sobbing to look at me quizzically. "Why does your mom want cat litter? You guys don't even have a cat."

"She uses it for..." I searched my brain madly, but all I could come up with was "teaching."

"She uses cat litter to teach English?"

I nodded. "She's kind of unconventional in her methods."

Hero frowned. "But how does she use it?"

The girl was relentless when she fixated on something. "Um, when their papers are really bad, she gives them a little bag of cat litter. It's her way of telling them their writing is crap." I laughed. "She's kooky.”
Jody Gehrman, Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty

“Think of it as a life experience," I mumbled. "Isn't your dad always saying we need more of that?"

"I don't think prancing around PJ Jamieson's pool in our underwear is exactly what he had in mind.”

Frank Portman
“It was more like an abortion than music, but he got a wildly enthusiastic response from the crowd. Well, we're all pro-choice out here in Hillmont, after all.”
Frank Portman, King Dork

David Levithan
“i think the idea of a 'mental health day' is something completely invented by people who have no clue what it's like to have bad mental health. the idea that your mind can be aired out in twenty-four hours is kind of like saying heart disease can be cured if you eat the right breakfast cereal. mental health days only exist for people who have the luxury of saying 'i don't want to deal with things today' and then can take the whole day off, while the rest of us are stuck fighting the fights we always fight, with no one really caring one way or another, unless we choose to bring a gun to school or ruin the morning announcements with a suicide.”
