I've been cautioned by many, and was cautioned again at the onset of reading Ms. Plath's only novel that her works invoke suicidal tendencies in the reader, like some sort of morbid snake charmer. Upon completion of the work I do agree that the piece, like Ms. Plath's poetry invokes emotions and fears that plague all of us. The Bell Jar traps the reader in the vacuum of 1950's America replete with it's restricted rolls for women and differing gender role/behavior standards for men and women. These problems plague the men and women of today as well, and every bit as personally as they affect the novel's heroine, Esther. Like Esther we must grow through pain and rebirth, we must avoid the vacuum of the bell jar, the vacuum of society, and in many instances the vacuum of our own minds - for if we cannot "the world itself is a bad dream."
