No cause for concern, my friends. No need to stage an intervention. Apparently, I can quit drugs any time I feel like it, because I had no problem putting this book down.

The story opened with a promising underground boxing scene, with blood splatter and everything. I wish there had been blood-splattering boxing scenes in every chapter. Alas, they were few and far between. For reasons unexplained, the freakishly handsome, damaged-soul, tatted-up boxer from the opening scene becomes romantically obsessed with our main character, Abby. Abby is inexplicably shrewish in return. I didn’t enjoy seeing her repeatedly reject the boxer. And I didn’t quite understand why she kept rejecting him—-the given explanation was a bit of nonsense. Eventually, Abby gave in to the boxer, and all was well. Briefly. Then came the first painful break-up. Followed by a tearful reunion. Followed by an inexplicable break-up. And so on.

Don’t get me wrong here. There was still some srs entertainment value in this book. The author does a great job fleshing out her characters and building tension between them. I enjoyed the boxer and all his faults. I tolerated Abby.

I wouldn’t recommend this for younger audiences, due to language, mature content, and references to 1960s rock music. Also, it’s crazy-long. In glue-and-paper form, this beautiful disaster would be roughly 550 pages. I can handle books of such girth if I’m at Hogwarts or if I’m deciding between a vampire and a werewolf, but not for a simple contemporary romansh. The things those self-pubs can get away with! Sheesh! But it’s always nice to see a self-published author do well. Cheers!

PS. At one point we learn that Abby is exceptionally skilled at 5 card draw poker (?!), and she goes to Vegas to hustle money from other 5 card draw poker (?!) pros at a casino.

If you have any general knowledge of poker, you know what is wrong with that whole scenario. If you don’t, let me assure you, no one plays 5 card draw for money, except for Wild West outlaws in 1896. 5 card draw is a game of chance. So there are no 5 card draw poker pros. Casinos do not have 5 card draw poker tables, just like they don’t have War or Slap Jack or Crazy Eight tables. You can play 5 card draw on a video slot machine, like other games of chance. But for poker with strategy, it’s Texas hold ‘em. And you do not deal the cards yourself (ha!). The casinos have dealers at each table and they are very sensitive about who touches the decks. If you leave the table to stop your boyfriend from punching your ex, the game doesn’t stop for you. It keeps going and bets will be placed from your chip pile while you’re gone if you're the blind.(less)
