This is one of the finest contemporary history books I have ever read. Its composition is as grand and expressive as its subject. Its language is both somber and humorous. Most of all, it offers a truly agnostic history of Christianity. This is not a...more

The Brontë sisters. I love them. Here Emily creates one of my favorite characters, a brooding and dark Englishman named Heathcliff whose past, so hurtful and filled with pain, transforms him into an absolute monster of a man. Seriously. One of the wo...more

Wide in scope and yet minute in detail, filled with classic characters and action packed set pieces. This is one of my favorite novels, if not my favorite. I'm going to put off reading it again until New Years at which point I will start my chapter-a...more

The Elvis Cole novels are great. Real big fun. This one was a little sad actually, but still fun. Crais's Hemingway really comes out here, which is nice.

It's been years since I read this book. I read it many time before, mostly in high school. I'l probably read it many times again. I love it. Mostly because it's so sad and funny.

Collins does it again. Not only does he manage to keep interest in a very long book he also creates very memorable characters. Mr. Betteredge is hilarious what with his Robinson Crusoe and all. Plus, it's got that great Victorian language. Great book...more

Anne Sexton
“As it has been said:
Love and a cough
cannot be concealed.
Even a small cough.
Even a small love.”
Anne Sexton

Charlotte Brontë
“No sight so sad as that of a naughty child," he began, "especially a naughty little girl. Do you know where the wicked go after death?"

"They go to hell," was my ready and orthodox answer.

"And what is hell? Can you tell me that?"

"A pit full of fire."

"And should you like to fall into that pit, and to be burning there for ever?"

"No, sir."

"What must you do to avoid it?"

I deliberated a moment: my answer, when it did come was objectionable: "I must keep in good health and not die.”
Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

Robert Frost
“These woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”
Robert Frost, Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening

James Branch Cabell
“The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds; and the pessimist fears this is true.”
James Branch Cabell, The Silver Stallion

Benjamin Franklin
“He that lieth down with Dogs, shall rise up with Fleas.”
Benjamin Franklin
