This follow-up to Farthing, continuing the postwar slide of an alternate-historical Britain into fascism, is good, but (as I'd been warned) it doesn't have the near perfection of its predecessor. The structure is the same -- first-person narration alternating chapters with third-person narrative -- but the characters, especially the newly introduced narrator for the first-person chapters, don't come into as clear focus, and the plot is disappointingly short on surprise or novelty. The best thing about Farthing is how subtly its political message is woven into the background of a deceptively conventional mystery novel; in Ha'penny the politics are front and center, and something is lost.
