Joan Didion is casually perfect in her depiction of ex-pats. This is the first novel of hers I've read. I was worried it wouldn't stand up to her essays and nonfiction. And it wasn't as magical as the Year of Magical Thinking, but I love the way she uses language, especially to describe people. She makes stereotyping and reducing people to symbols seem kind of high brow.
