The Host by Stephenie Meyer
I'm not a Meyer super-fan, but I enjoyed this book a great deal. I think the premise was pretty interesting and not as kitschy as I thought it would be. I think the characters were all a little too one-dimensional but the story was pretty interesting...more

Aesop's Fables by Aesop
This was interesting. Obviously all the famous tales are in there and then there are a bunch of stories that are lesser known because, well, they really aren't great stories. Pretty interesting stuff though. I kind of wish I had read this with a book...more

Alphabet Juice by Roy Blount Jr.
This was a great way to get into the nitty-gritty of the English language. I read it straight through--which is not recommended--but it was still good. A lot of it made me laugh out loud. Some of it is dated. There are just so many references to Geor...more

Quiet by Susan Cain
This was an excellent book. I have a heckuva lot of introverts in my life and identify strongly with many introvert traits so I appreciated the thoughtfulness Cain applies to the subject. Good book. Highly recommended.

Light of the New Day by Darin Cozzens
Light of the New Day
by Darin Cozzens
read in July, 2012
At first I really didn't like this book because I was desperately jealous of the author for writing it. Once I got over my jealousy I really appreciated it. Not every story was four stars for me, but the writing was thoughtful and precise and had jus...more

Adventures of Goody Two Shoes by Oliver Goldsmith
I read this just so I could know the origin of the phrase. It was short and wasn't bad, but I don't necessarily recommend it.

Walls Within Walls by Maureen Sherry
Walls Within Walls

This was another fun summer read with my kiddos. The mystery and history elements were fun and I liked the dynamic between the siblings. I've never lived in New York so I think a lot of the elements in the story weren't as vivid for me. Still good th...more

A Tale of Two Castles by Gail Carson Levine
Gail Carson Levine visited our local library and my girls and I went to hear her speak. She was very fun. We bought _Two Castles_ and it was a good read. It's not my favorite of hers (I LOVE _Fairest_ and I really like the Tinker Bell series), but de...more

The Fairy-Tale Detectives by Michael Buckley
This was fun. I read it with my daughter and it was a cute story with a few surprises (for my daughter; not so much for me). I would definitely recommend this for elementary aged readers.
