I read this for work-related purposes (definitely got some weird looks for being a relatively small person and reading this in public, ha). Anyways, I thought it was fine. Some of my colleagues' hatred for it (I won't mention any names :)) may have influenced my opinions a little, but I tried not to let this be a factor. This could be a good choice for someone looking for a middle-ground book: in between the popular diet books and a super-scientific nutrition/eating behavior book. It introduces the reader to some of the research in this area, although Kessler does (understandably) spend a lot of time pushing his opinions of what he thinks is going on and his choice remedy ("Food Rehab").

I didn't finish this book yet but probably will not pick it back up until I am teaching again. I taught for the first time this summer and enjoyed reading the first few chapters of this book as I went through the semester. The book really motivated me to think beyond what was expected or required of me and to try to think of ways to engage the students and make their experience memorable, worthwhile, relevant to their lives, etc. Hopefully at least a few of my students had an experience a little bit like this!

I was surprised at myself for finding this book to be "just ok," especially given other people's rave reviews and my enjoyment of Updike in general. I think my rating was deflated because I liked this so much less than Rabbit, Run. I guess on some level it's fascinating that a book by the same author can read so differently. That being said, I was a lot less motivated to read the book quickly and felt as though the pace of the writing was a lot slower. I also felt that the focus on all different characters resulted in a trade-off where I didn't feel as in tune with Rabbit's own thoughts. I really enjoyed the challenge of following the thoughts of a protagonist behaving badly in the first book, and here, I just felt like I was observing a bunch of strange events from the outside. I am interested to see what I think of the third and fourth books... if they fit into one of these camps or the other, or if they are unique in their own right.

I did not love this book, and it took me awhile to get through. The pace was slow, I never became truly invested in the story, and the writing style wasn't one that really spoke to me.

One "pro" -- the reviews I read were correct in stating that this book achieves the rare feat of simultaneously revolving around a murder AND making the reader want to visit the location where the story is set. Savannah, GA is now on my "to-visit" list. Also, each time I reminded myself that this book is based on a true story, this realization added a little spark to the story and motivated me to find out what happened at the end.
